The Two Affiliate Marketing Approaches
Okay, say you’re a new affiliate and you’re trying to decide how you want to make money online. Well, at ClickBank, we usually categorize affiliate marketing into two main approaches: free traffic and paid traffic.
Free Traffic: With free traffic, you’re attracting visitors through organic methods like SEO blogging, organic social, podcasting, and email marketing. While this method will require a lot of sustained time and effort to see meaningful results, it’s also less risky financially, because you can do it for near-zero cost.
Paid Traffic: Paid traffic involves investing money upfront in ads on platforms like Google, Facebook, and Instagram to drive traffic to the affiliate offer you’re promoting. This method can yield quicker results (if you know what you’re doing), but it does come with higher financial risk as well. (Realistically, you’ll probably need at least $2,000 set aside to invest in paid media spend.)
Now, in both cases, you don’t always know what you don’t know. That’s one reason why a coach is so helpful – because they’ve been where you are and can help you avoid the same mistakes they’ve made along the way.
The Value of 1×1 Coaching
We’ve seen the positive effects of affiliate coaching firsthand!
ClickBank recently started a 1×1 coaching program for up-and-coming affiliates. And guess what? We’ve seen time after time how Spark students who were struggling to make their first sale on ClickBank FINALLY had that big breakthrough shortly after they started working with one of our affiliate marketing coaches. All of that focused guidance and feedback truly makes a big difference!
So, we know that coaching has the potential to be life-changing for you and your business. But before we talk about where to find a coach, let’s talk about whether you’re ready for one in your affiliate journey right now.
Are You Ready for an Affiliate Coach?
I think it’s safe to say that virtually anyone could benefit from a more experienced affiliate marketer sharing their wisdom and applying those insights to their own business. The real question is, does it make financial sense for you to do so?
Let’s break down “readiness” into two major buckets: resources and skills.
The Resources You Need
When it comes to resources, you’ll obviously need money set aside that you can invest in coaching. To be safe, I would save up at least a few thousand dollars for the coaching piece, on top of that potential $2,000 you would need if you decide to go the paid affiliate route.
Similarly, you’ll need to have some meaningful time available to work on growing your business. It’s okay if you don’t right now – we’re all busy working professionals with families and lots of obligations, so there’s no shame in that. But you shouldn’t spend serious money to work with an affiliate coach if you don’t have time to follow through on the coach’s suggestions.
In terms of time, expect to block out at least an hour per week for the coaching piece, and another 5-10 hours per week to work on your business and apply your coach’s feedback.
The Skills You Need
Now, when it comes to skills, you should be honest with yourself about where you’re at. On ClickBank, there are people at all different skill levels. In my post on affiliate marketing skills, I identified the most important skills an affiliate should work on, from copywriting to building pages to video editing.
Do you need to master all of these skills before working with a coach? Of course not! But if you haven’t put in the time and effort to learn some of these skills yet, then you’re probably not going to get as much out of your coaching sessions as you otherwise would.
My advice is to have SOME experience doing the marketing you plan to do, whether that’s creating SEO content, posting videos on social media, building a landing page, or running a paid campaign. Then, once you feel like you’ve hit a ceiling or plateau in what you can do on your own, get a coach to help you break through to the next level!
The Best Affiliate Marketing Coaches
If you’ve got the resources and the skills, then you’re officially ready to look for a coach!
This section is where I would list the best affiliate marketing coaches out there, but I’m going to go against the grain here a little.
Yes, there are obviously some fantastic affiliate marketers out there with a huge following online. If you’re at all familiar with this space, then you’ll recognize names like:
Matt Diggity
Pat Flynn
John Crestani
Spencer Haws
Miles Beckler
Shawn Collins
Robby Blanchard
And honestly, if you could get one of them to coach you at an affordable price, then by all means, jump at the opportunity!
But the reality is, these “celebrity” coaches or affiliate marketing “gurus” are way too experienced to provide help to anyone who’s still new to the space, especially if you’re looking for 1-on-1 help.
In fact, even if you wanted to pay the hundreds or thousands of dollars an hour required to talk to them, chances are good their advice would go over your head. So for now, let’s look at some other ways you can find coaching, or alternatives to coaching!
1×1 Coaching Opportunities and Alternatives
1) Freelance Coaching Platforms
Upwork/Fiverr: These platforms have a wide range of freelance digital marketing and affiliate marketing experts who offer one-on-one consulting services. While they aren’t going to be as famous as the big names I just mentioned, there are skilled marketers on these platforms who can offer tailored advice and support to you at a more affordable rate.
Clarity.fm: Clarity.fm is a platform that connects users with experts in various business specialties, including affiliate marketing, for one-on-one calls. This could be a good option if you want tailored advice from seasoned marketing professionals without necessarily committing to a long-term coaching program.
2) Niche-Specific Coaches
Some affiliate marketing coaches specialize in particular niches (such as health, dating, or technology) or in particular traffic sources (SEO blogging, YouTube Ads, Instagram/TikTok, etc.). These coaches may not have broad fame, but they can provide highly relevant advice to the kind of affiliate marketing you’re trying to do.
One good option is to search for niche-specific forums or groups where these coaches may advertise their services. This is especially helpful if you’re targeting a very specific market or using a very specific traffic source, as these niche coaches can provide more customized strategies than a generalist would.
3) Affiliate Marketing Communities with Mentorship Programs
Facebook Groups & Reddit Communities: Many affiliate marketing communities offer informal mentorship opportunities. Members of these groups often share their experiences publicly or are willing to send a DM with more granular advice. I see this all the time on Reddit, and I’m sure there are Facebook Groups, Discords, and other communities out there with the same opportunities.
In some cases, these experts may offer one-on-one guidance in exchange for a fee, or they may simply be happy to give back to the community without charging for it.
Affiliate Networks Offering Mentorship: Many affiliate networks offer educational resources or even access to affiliate marketing experts as part of their programs. These often include webinars, Q&As, or group coaching sessions that provide value, even if they aren’t tailored one-on-one.
If you’re a newer affiliate, you can watch for these resources to get some valuable guidance without springing for private coaching. For more ideas on mentorship, check out my guide on how to find an affiliate marketing mentor.
4) Online Courses with Coaching Elements
Courses with Coaching Add-ons: Platforms like Udemy or Teachable offer affiliate marketing courses, some of which include access to the instructor for personalized feedback or occasional one-on-one sessions. These are another affordable way to get tailored advice while also benefiting from structured learning. (See our full list of the best affiliate marketing courses.)
Membership Sites with Coaching Support: Sites like Wealthy Affiliate offer a combination of training modules and access to a community of mentors and coaches. While not a direct one-on-one service, the membership usually includes personal support from more experienced marketers in the community.
5) Affiliate Marketing Conferences and Workshops
In-Person or Virtual Events: Events like Affiliate Summit often provide opportunities for one-on-one consultations or small group workshops with experienced marketers. These interactions can be brief but provide valuable, targeted advice that could help affiliates refine their strategies. Virtual workshops also offer the chance to connect with mentors who might otherwise be inaccessible.
In fact, a few colleagues and I headed down to PI Live in Miami this year to learn from other experts at the AM Leaders sessions. We not only got some valuable new knowledge there, but also met affiliate marketing experts who we’ve continued to stay in touch with.
Conferences and workshops focused around affiliate marketing can be the perfect way to get face-time with potential mentors or coaches!
How to Find the Right Affiliate Marketing Coach
If you’re looking for a coach, it’s important to find someone with experience and a track record of success. Here are some ways to uncover a good one:
Research Online: Look for prominent affiliate marketing coaches who have a strong online presence. Read reviews, check their testimonials, and look for case studies of their past students.
Join Affiliate Marketing Communities: Communities on platforms like Facebook, Reddit, or specialized forums often have discussions about coaching programs. You can get recommendations and even connect with experts willing to provide some affiliate marketing mentorship or coaching directly.
Our Spark affiliate education platform is another great way to get into a community full of like-minded affiliates who are serious about growing their skills and their online incomes!
Consider ClickBank’s Coaching Program: ClickBank offers a new 1×1 affiliate marketing coaching program through Spark, designed for affiliates who want to master paid traffic strategies and make $250K+ as a media buyer affiliate.
The program pairs you with an experienced affiliate coach like Ernesto Mejia, who provides personalized guidance to help you achieve your affiliate marketing goals!
Why a Coach is Crucial for Paid Traffic Success
Paid traffic can be incredibly effective for affiliate marketing, but it’s also like navigating a minefield – one wrong step and things could blow up in your face, whether that’s losing a significant amount of money, failing to track which of your ads are profitable, or even having your ad account shut down!
That’s why having a coach is so invaluable. A coach will help you understand the nuances of paid traffic, guiding you on how to create high-converting ads, optimize your campaigns, and manage your budget effectively.
Coaches can help you avoid the costly mistakes of over-spending on ads that don’t convert, or targeting the wrong audience. They can also provide strategic insights on offer selection, ad copy, targeting, budgets, and landing pages.
In the Spark 1×1 coaching program, your coach can guide you through A/B testing, optimizing landing pages, and tweaking your messaging to resonate with the right audience segments, all of which are critical for turning paid traffic into affiliate profits.
Currently, our coaching program features powerhouse affiliate experts like Ernesto and Sadie for Facebook Ads and YouTube Ads… And we’ve seen coaching students get incredible results so far!
